Crown Melbourne
Southbank on the Yarra — the biggest casino resort in the Southern Hemisphere, and the easiest one to fold into a Melbourne stopover.
A different kind of stopover
Every route on this site is built around national parks, free camps and quiet coastline. This page is for the nights you want the opposite of that.
Six months into a lap, most people hit the same wall: another gorge, another free camp, another early night by the fire. None of that is a complaint — it's the whole point of the trip — but it doesn't hurt to plan for the nights when what you actually want is bright lights, a proper restaurant booking and a room you didn't have to set up yourself. That's what this section is for.
Australia's major casino resorts sit in or near almost every capital city on the lap, which makes them easy to fold in as a deliberate change of pace rather than a whole separate trip — a long weekend of live entertainment and good food between two long stretches of highway, then back out to the next national park with the batteries actually recharged.

Historic first · Tasmania
Australia's first legal casino, opened 1973 — a circular tower overlooking the Derwent River in Hobart.

City stop · Western Australia
Burswood's riverside resort — Western Australia's only casino, and a solid stop before or after a Nullarbor crossing.
If one casino-hotel night isn't enough, the Casino Circuit strings several of the properties above into a themed add-on you can weave through an existing lap leg — city stop, city stop, back to the coast.
Most of these resorts run their own calendar of live entertainment, poker series and exhibitions well beyond the gaming floor itself — see Casino Events for what that generally looks like and how to time a visit around it.
We're also looking at organised, small-group casino-hotel trips paced for a slower, more social kind of travel — see Group Casino Tours for where that's up to.
