About Dapplemoor

Built for the lap, not the weekend

Dapplemoor exists for one trip: the Big Lap around Australia, and the months of planning that come before it.

Most travel sites are built around short trips — a long weekend, a fortnight's holiday. Dapplemoor is built around a different kind of trip: the six-to-twelve month circuit of the Australian coastline that hundreds of caravanners and motorhome travellers set out on every year, commonly known as the Big Lap.

That's a genuinely different planning problem. It's not "where should we go this weekend" — it's "how do we sequence a full year around the seasons, keep a rig running for 15,000 km, and still be speaking to each other by the end of it." Everything on this site is organised around that problem: routes with real distances and durations, gear advice that assumes months of use rather than a weekend, and seasonal timing that treats the wet season as the non-negotiable constraint it actually is.

Who this is for

People planning their first lap, people on their third, and everyone in between — whether you're still deciding on a rig or you're somewhere on the Nullarbor right now.

Why we built it this way

Most of the guidance a first-time lapper finds online is either a personal blog covering one specific trip, or a forum thread that assumes you already know the jargon. Dapplemoor is meant to sit between the two — structured like a reference site so you can find the specific answer you need, but written by people who've actually planned this exact trip rather than generic travel-writing filler. Every page is organised the way the decision actually comes up on a real lap, not alphabetically or by whatever gets the most search traffic.

What's free and what isn't

Every page of route, gear, safety and planning information on this site is free and always will be. Where we charge is for the parts of planning that genuinely benefit from a second set of eyes on your specific trip — a custom itinerary, a season check on your dates, a booking we handle on your behalf. See Services & Pricing for the full list, and note registered members get a discount on all of it.

A note on the content

Distances, durations and seasonal guidance on this site are general planning figures based on how the lap is typically done, not live road condition data — always check current conditions, park bookings and road closures with the relevant local authority before you travel. Where we mention a business, club or app by name, it's because it's genuinely useful for this trip, not a paid placement.
