What it actually costs
Money & concessions
Pension and seniors discounts, seasonal work on the road, and realistic budget tiers for the lap.
Seniors and pensioner concessions
A state Seniors Card (or the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card / Pensioner Concession Card) is worth carrying even if you don't think you'll use it — many caravan parks, especially independently-run regional ones, offer a quiet discount to card holders that isn't always advertised. It's always worth asking at check-in.
Worth doing before you leave
Apply for your state's Seniors Card before departure if you're eligible and don't already have one — National Seniors Australia membership is a separate, additional option that bundles further travel and insurance discounts.
Working while you travel
A meaningful number of lappers fund part of the trip with seasonal work along the way:
- Fruit and vegetable picking — seasonal harvest work is common through regional Queensland, Victoria and South Australia, often with a powered site thrown in as part of the arrangement.
- Caravan park caretaking — a free or discounted site in exchange for a few hours a week on reception or grounds duties, common in smaller regional parks looking for a couple to stay a season.
- Remote hospitality and station work — outback pubs and cattle stations often take on couples for a season, particularly through the dry season up north.

Realistic budget tiers
- Budget
- Mostly free camps, cooking your own meals, minimal paid activities — workable from roughly AU$1,800–2,500/month for a couple.
- Mid-range
- A mix of free camps and powered caravan-park sites, eating out occasionally — typically AU$3,000–4,000/month.
- Comfort
- Mostly booked caravan parks, regular dining out, tours and activities — AU$4,500/month and up.
Planning around fuel cost
Fuel prices climb the further you get from a capital city, sometimes sharply in the last fuel stop before a long remote stretch. Fill up in regional centres rather than waiting for the final servo before a long leg — it's routinely 20–40 cents a litre cheaper.
Where a budget actually goes wrong
The gap between a planned budget and an actual one is almost never the day-to-day spending — it's the things nobody budgets for at all. Tyre replacement after a long unsealed stretch, a windscreen chip that needs fixing before it spreads, an unplanned week in a caravan park while a part is freighted in — these are common enough on a lap that they're not really exceptions, they're part of the real cost of the trip. Building a genuine 10–15% buffer into whichever tier above you're planning around is the single easiest way to avoid the budget stress that otherwise creeps in around month four or five.
Concession eligibility is also worth checking beyond the obvious Seniors Card — some regional shires offer their own ratepayer or local resident discounts at council-run caravan parks and showgrounds that have nothing to do with age, and are easy to miss if you only ever ask about the standard card.
If you'd rather have someone build a realistic month-by-month budget around your specific route than work it out from general figures like these, that's exactly what a Custom Lap Itinerary includes. See Services & Pricing for the full list.
