Plan the Big Lap Around Australia, Not Just the Next Tank of Fuel

Everything below is laid out the way the lap actually happens — in order, mile by mile, from the driveway back to the driveway. Use it as a calm checklist before each stretch of road.

What the Big Lap Around Australia Actually Involves

The Big Lap is a full circuit of the Australian coastline by caravan, motorhome or camper trailer. Most people take six months to a year and do it in stages, not one unbroken drive.

~15,000 km
Typical full-circuit distance, coastal route
6–12 mo
Common duration for a first lap, unhurried
2 seasons
North in the dry season, south in summer — timing is the whole game
  • Choose your rig first. Caravan, camper trailer or motorhome — the right one depends on how remote you're planning to get, not just budget.
  • Set dates around the seasons, not the calendar. Work backwards from the wet season up north, not forwards from when you'd like to leave.
  • Sort the boring bit before the fun bit. Mail redirection, banking, home security, Medicare — it needs doing first, not on the road.

Need a hand with any of this?

Most of this site is free. Some of it doesn't have to be done alone.

A Route Season-Check, a custom itinerary, or someone to chase down a ferry booking — if you'd rather not plan every leg solo, that's what these are for.

Caravan & Motorhome Rigs for the Big Lap

Solar, water, towing, maintenance on the road — the practical side of living out of a van or caravan for months at a time.

Free Camps & Caravan Parks Around Australia

Caravan parks, free camps, national parks and station stays — most laps mix all four, and knowing when to use which saves real money.

Best time for the Big Lap

Read the season before the map

Get this wrong and you're stuck behind a flooded causeway or driving Adelaide in 44°C heat. Get it right and it plans most of the trip for you.

MAY–SEP
Top End, Kimberley, Cape York — dry season, roads open
NOV–MAR
Southern states, Tasmania — mild days, long light
DEC–APR
Wet season up north — many outback roads close entirely

You're not doing this alone

“You learn the UHF channel etiquette in about a week, and after that everyone on the road is basically a neighbour.”
