Regional loop

Red Centre Loop

Alice Springs, Uluru, Kings Canyon and the Stuart Highway — the outback lap people do without leaving the bitumen.

Distance
~1,600 km
Typical duration
2–3 weeks
Best season
April–September
Vehicle
Any rig, fully sealed

The route

A loop out from Alice Springs taking in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) and the West MacDonnell Ranges, all on sealed roads — making it the most accessible genuine outback experience on the whole lap, suitable for any rig.

Timing it right

Summer in the Red Centre regularly exceeds 40°C and makes walking tracks genuinely dangerous by mid-morning; winter nights can drop below freezing. April–September gives warm, walkable days and cold-but-manageable nights — pack layers regardless of when you go.

What to see

  • Uluru — the base walk and sunset/sunrise viewing areas are the main draw; climbing Uluru itself has been closed since 2019 out of respect for its status as a sacred site to the Anangu traditional owners.
  • Kings Canyon — the Rim Walk is one of the more spectacular half-day hikes in the country, best started early to avoid the heat.
  • West MacDonnell Ranges — a string of gorges and swimming holes within easy reach of Alice Springs, worth a full day or two on their own.

Cultural context worth knowing before you go

Uluru and its surrounding land are jointly managed by the Anangu traditional owners and Parks Australia, and a genuine appreciation of the site benefits from understanding that context before you arrive rather than treating it purely as a scenic stop. The Cultural Centre near the base of Uluru is worth the short detour, and a ranger-guided walk (bookable on arrival or in advance through the park) adds a level of understanding a self-guided drive-by simply can't.

Why this loop suits a first-timer

Because every kilometre of this route is sealed and every stop is well serviced, it's one of the lowest-risk ways to get a genuine taste of the outback before committing to something more remote like the Savannah Way or Gibb River Road. A lot of first-time lappers do this loop early in their trip specifically to build confidence and test their rig's cooling and tyre performance in real heat before tackling a tougher route later on.

If this is your first genuine outback leg and you'd like a plan tailored to your rig and comfort level, a Pre-Departure Planning Call is a good place to start. See Services & Pricing for the full list.

Fuel and water on this loop

Alice Springs, Yulara (the Uluru resort town) and Kings Canyon all have fuel and basic supplies, so this loop doesn't demand the extreme fuel discipline of a genuinely remote crossing — but prices climb noticeably the further you get from Alice Springs, so top up there when you can rather than relying solely on the smaller stops.
